GB Women Dominate Winter Sports Competition

The Sadia Khan and Children Ski/Snowboard Championships concluded on February 17th, 2024, at PAF Ski Resort Nalter, Gilgit, Gilgit-Baltistan.

The Gilgit Baltistan Winter Sports Association (GBWSA) emerged as the standout performers in the National Sadia Khan Skiing and Snowboarding Championship 2024. GBWSA secured a total of 8 medals, including 2 gold, 3 silver, and 3 bronze, ultimately claiming the National Sadia Khan Cup. Among the achievers was Mishal Hussain of GBWSA, who won two gold medals in skiing and one bronze in snowboarding. Alongside, Khushim of Team PAF clinched two gold medals, while Ifrah Wali and Fatima Ali of GBWSA demonstrated their skills with one silver and one bronze each in the skiing category.

Ayesha Akmal of Team PAF and Amina Sohail of Team GBWSA won gold and silver, respectively, in the national snowboarding competition.

Women's participation in sports in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) was almost nonexistent until very recently. In almost a decade, GB's women's participation in most sports has rapidly increased, with great success. Notably, in cricket, Diana Baig made it into Pakistan's national women's cricket team as a medium-fast bowler and has since performed very well for the country. She was the only player from Gilgit-Baltistan to have played in the 2022 Women's World Cup. Similarly, in the field of combat sports, Anita Karim has maintained a perfect record in the international MMA promotion, One Championship.

The participation of GB's women in national competitions has also increased substantially. This has been attributed to the promotion of women's sports locally and the tournaments held at the village level. Inter-village competitions and sports events for women have surged greatly, especially in the region of Hunza.
